The name derives from the Hebrew Yoseph and means “grown by God”, from yasaph, to add. Adopted in Greek like Ioseph and then Iosephos or Iosepos, it has been rendered in Latin like Ioseph, Iosephus and, in more popular form, Ioseppus, from which the Italian Giuseppe was drift. Giuseppe was the name of the eleventh son of Giacobbe and also of the spouse of Maria mother of Jesus.
