Meaning of Isabella

The name derives from the fenice Gezabele, drawn from Ezbel whose meaning is “loving of Baal”. Others consider it as a medieval variation of the Spanish name Elisabetta. The ancient Spanish name Elisabet would have become Elisabel and therefore reduced to Isabel. Introduced in Italy, it becomes Isabella, partially for assonance with bella “beautiful”, partially supported from the French Isabelle.
