Short form of Carola, which in its turn is a scholar variant of Carla, in use in the medieval Latin. Carla derives in its turn from the Frankish name Karl and from the German karla, which initially meant “man”, and in later age took the meaning of “man of free condition”; the name can therefore be interpreted as “free woman”.
