Drift from the Frankish name Karl and in its turn from the German Karla, than initially meant “man”, and in later age took the meaning of “man of free condition”. In 737 Carlo Martello assumed in France the royal power, giving life to the dynasty of the Carolingi, to which the most famous Carlo Magno belonged.
